Nobody's
new album "Pacific Drift: Western Water Music Vol.
1" unfolds a new West Coast psychedelic sound. It
salutes the Byrds, Beach Boys, and Love
while shaking hands with Manitoba, DJ Shadow, and
Prefuse 73. Featured collaborators include members
of the Postal Service, Beachwood Sparks, Dntel, Languis,
Athalia, and the Mars Volta.
Nobody is the 25 year old somebody named Elvin Estela. He is an
LA vinyl junkie hypnotized by analog waves and creates albums mirroring
phases of his stereo obsessions. His debut album, "Soulmates"
was a hip-hop/cosmic jazz statement springing from early studio
days and back alley freestyle sessions. Now Estela shows listeners
a different shade of his soul. The concrete streets of "Soulmates"
have melted into the flowing dreams of "Pacific Drift."
"Pacific Drift" is pure sampler psych
wrapped in golden gauze. Nobody flips his favorite 60's psychedelic
masterpieces into new expressions. Sunshine melodies ride on heavyweight
rhythms as acoustic textures sparkle into dub. Using a prehistoric
sampler and sequencer Elvin excavates precious notes from wax, stretching
them into his own multi-hued palette. From this spreading spectrum
he paints the picture that hums in his mind. Electro washes onto
shores of shimmering indie rock swirled with hip-hop. Notes soar,
tumble, and spray like tidal waves. Genres blur in the thick haze
of his unique landscape.
Estela is a hyperactive link in the LA music chain. He spends days
stocking essential listening at Fingerprints Record Store and nights
rocking hot decks. With a scarf wrapped loosely around his neck
Nobody warms up crowds to fresh archives. He can get jiggy dance
floors exploding to the sound of kaleidoscopic, paisley soul. He
also shares psychedelic jewels through his weekly "She Comes
in Colours" session on LA's fiercely underground KXLU 88.9fm.
Elvin is a lab rat in computer love. He faithfully spreads interconnected

Nobody gets by with a little help from his friends. On "Soulmates"
his compositions hosted the cream of the hip-hop crop: Abstract
Rude, the Freestyle Fellowship, Medusa, and 2 Mex. Pacific Drift
continues tapping the talent of his tight music circle. This time
indie rock shines. Vocal and instrumental collaborators include:
Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel/the Postal Service), Ikey Owens
(Mars Volta), Dave Scher and Chris Gunst (of Beachwood Sparks),
Languis, and Paul Larson (Athalia/Dntel). Along with his
peers, Elvin Estela defines a new West Coast sound and "Pacific
Drift" reflects the beautiful echoes of his mind.
